'404 page not found' page is as important in a Magento webshop as they are in any other website. Fortunately, Magento has a manageable '404' page by default. You can easily edit and manage the Magento '404 error' page or you can even create your own custom '404 error' page from Magento backend.

Magento OS 2.X
You can manage the content of 404 page from Magento backoffice > Content > Pages > Open '404 Not Found' page > You can manage and edit the page content from the title and content field > Save Page.

If you want to use any other custom page that you have created then you can configure that from  Magento backoffice > Stores > Configuration > General > Web > Default pages > CMS No Route Page > Select your page from the dropdown > Save

You can also configure separate 404 error pages for each of your store-view.

Magento CE 1.X

'404 page not found' page content can be managed in Magento 1.X from backoffice > CMS > Pages > Open the page '404 Not Found' > Edit the content in Content field > Save.

If you want to display any other custom page then you can manage that from backoffice > System > Configuration > General > Web > Default pages > CMS No Route Page > Select your page from the dropdown > Save.
